Smart Telecom launches Smart Pesa, the cheapest Mobile Money Platform in Uganda

Smart Telecom has ventured into the lucrative mobile money business in Uganda by launching Smart Pesa. Smart Telecom CEO Abdellatif Bouziana announced this at a press conference held at their headquarters in Kampala on Friday. In line with Smart Telecom’s marketing strategy, sending any amount of money to a tune of UGX 4 million will be a flat rate of only 100 Uganda shillings across all networks.

The initial Smart Pesa mobile money services are your usual run-of-the-mill services the rest of the telecom companies offer. However, Smart Telecom plans to give their customers access to micro-credit and micro-savings accounts in the near future. Furthermore, the 100 shilling transaction rate is something no other service provider has ever done before.

Smart Telecom has done similar promotions to bump up sales for its data and voice packages. On entering the Ugandan market in 2014, Smart Telecom SIM cards went for only UGX 500 and calls for an entire month at UGX 1000. Smart Telecom also offered 1.5 GB of data at a game-changing price of UGX 1000, not been repeated since.

“We know that financial inclusion is very important, not only to our customers, but to all Ugandans. From being able to send and receive money from family and friends, topping up airtime as well as bill payment; SMART Pesa will support people’s everyday needs, with robust systems that offer unparalleled reliability of service,” Smart Telecom CEO, Abdellatif Bouziana ~ BigEye
