APK files

Like any other operating system, Android has a file format in which it accepts its software to run. An APK file is the file format used for installing software on the Android operating system.

So, if you wish to download an application but have no access to the Play Store, go ahead and look for its APK file.

These files come with some benefits that you may not find in apps on the Store.

For example, if an app is restricted from your region or country, you can opt for its apk file. It will download easily without any limitations. They also allow you to access the latest updates on your already installed applications without delay.

The best way to download is from a search engine like Google and Opera. In there, type the application you wish to download such as ‘Whatsapp APK file’, ‘Facebook APK file’, accordingly. Once you get your search results, go ahead and select a suitable site from which to safely get the file.

If your friend has the APK file for the app you want, you can also have him or her send it to you through Bluetooth.

Note that if you are installing an APK file for the first time, you will need to make sure that third-party apps are allowed on your device. Here you go to Phone Settings > Security, and check Unknown Sources to allow your phone to install apps from sources other than the Google Play Store.

Installing the APK file

The process is very easy. Open the file manager, and locate the folder in which your APK file has been stored. By default, if you have downloaded the file from the internet, it will be stored in the Downloads folder. If it was sent via Bluetooth, then check under the Bluetooth folder.

Tap on the folder and you will see the file name listed. Once you select it, a prompt message will display inquiring whether you really want to install the application.

Select install from the button at the bottom of the screen. It will take about a minute to fully install depending on the file size.
