Apple iPhone Fold Dummy Units Surface, Showing Book-Fold Design and White-Only Colors

New photos of a pre-production dummy unit for Apple’s folding iPhone surfaced on June 7, giving the clearest look yet at the device’s shape — and suggesting white may be the only color available at launch.

Leaker Sonny Dickson posted four images on X, labeling them directly as an “iPhone Fold dummy unit.” The shots show the phone in open and closed states. Unfolded, it uses a book-fold layout: two panels joined at a hinge along one edge, with a large inner screen occupying most of the front surface. The outer shell carries a camera module on one half and a smaller external display on the other, which users can see without opening the phone. A prior image circulated on Weibo on June 1; Dickson’s four shots expand on that with a view from both sides and in both positions. The design lines up with a CAD rendering Dickson published in March.

On color, Dickson’s read is direct: “It doesn’t look like Apple will offer multiple colors, with white currently appearing to be the only option.” Leaker Instant Digital separately reported Apple was still deciding whether to introduce a black variant — suggesting the internal debate exists but a second color isn’t settled. Neither source has confirmed a final decision. If white is the only finish at launch, that’s a departure from standard iPhone practice, where Apple typically offers four to six colors per model.

The book-fold format places the iPhone Fold in direct competition with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series, which has held this market since 2019. A book-fold opens horizontally like a small notebook, producing a tablet-scale inner screen that works well for split-screen apps, reading, and video. The competing clamshell format — like the Galaxy Z Flip — folds top-to-bottom for a more compact closed size, with less inner-screen real estate. Apple is going book-fold, which targets users who want more screen area at the cost of a thicker, wider footprint when closed.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected next month, meaning both Samsung and Apple will be selling book-fold foldables simultaneously for the first time. Foldables at this tier have historically started at $1,799; Apple’s pricing is unconfirmed.

Dummy units are plastic form-factor replicas produced for accessory makers well before a device ships. They’re accurate to the device’s outer dimensions, camera positions, and port placements — which is why case manufacturers use them — but don’t reflect final glass quality, materials, or surface finish. Dickson has a solid track record on iPhone hardware leaks and has been the source of accurate dummy unit images for prior iPhone models. That history makes these images credible, though pre-production replicas are not a final guarantee.

The iPhone Fold is expected at Apple’s September event, alongside the standard iPhone 17 lineup. Today’s WWDC keynote is focused on software; no hardware pricing or availability details are expected from this week’s announcements.
