2018 Mercedes Benz X-Class coming to South Africa

Last week, there was excitement the world over among petrolheads when Mercedes officially debuted the X-Class, a pickup truck that had been rumored for years. Based on its competitor, Nissan’s Navara NP300 platform so it’s a case of tough ladder frame chassis with independent front suspension and a multi link set-up at the rear.

This is more than a mere rebadging job, however, and the X-Class has gained a wider track front and rear to aid stability as well as a 10mm lower ride height, a sharper steering ratio, and completely reworked suspension settings.

It will be powered by a host of engines, including a V-6 diesel developing between 160 hp and 190 hp, as well as a gas-powered version for select markets. All will feature Mercedes-Benz’s selectable 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, as well as three distinct trim options, including Pure, Progressive, and Power.

Mercedes-Benz has slated the X-Class to go on sale in Europe, Australia, South Africa, and South America next year. Last year, Ford also debuted their slightly underpowered new generation Ford Mustang in South Africa with plans to expand dealership to the rest of the continent. When it goes on sale in Europe, the X-Class will set buyers back a cool £37,294.
