Google’s YouTube Go allows for offline viewing and sharing.

Google is seemingly doubling down on Android for modestly spec’d devices and growing markets. We recently saw the launch of Files Go and the Android Oreo Go Edition. All these are with the aim of bringing Android to the next Billion users. Today, Google is making YouTube Go available in Kenya and a few other markets.

YouTube Go is a super lightweight version of the full YouTube app, specifically designed for developing countries. The app allows you to download videos in various qualities and send the locally saved ones to devices nearby via Bluetooth. This is no doubt a welcome feature in areas where data connection can be hard to come by.

The app soft-launched a while back and has been in beta for some time but has now seen a launch in India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Kenya just to mention a few. “YouTube Go is a brand new app to help the next generation of users share and enjoy videos,” YouTube product management VP Johanna Wright says in a statement. “YouTube Go was designed and built from the ground up with insights from India, in order to bring the power of video to mobile users in a way that is more conscious of their data and connectivity, while still being locally relevant and social.”

You can download the app on Play Store here.

  1. Good news to the Android users. Question how does this help google since one can download the videos they want and never go back to app when the user has an online connection? I knew google was profiting from the video ads.
Other than that I can’t wait for this in Uganda though like free basics (internet.org) it may come later than sooner… LOL

    • Well in my opinion, I think Google is trying to work on ways to help people, and not the other way around. It’s naive to think they aren’t getting anything from it, coz they obviously are. It could be part of a long game.
