Qualcomm launches the mid-range Snapdragon 675 geared towards mobile gaming

The midrange smartphone chip market is dominated by MediaTek that powers most of the phones we see on our shores from Infinix to Tecnos and Oppo devices. In other regions, the Snapdragon 625 from a couple of years back has for a long time been a favorite, powering most of the devices from the likes of Xiaomi. Of course, Samsung and Huawei have their own set of in-house chips; the Exynos and HiSilicon Kirin chips respectively.

More recently, the Snapdragon 660 has been an absolute champ. Launched back in 2017, this chip has outdone itself really; being super power-efficient and absolutely crushing it when it comes to performance. We saw that chip power the Xiaomi Mi A2 and the Nokia 7 Plus among a couple more notable mid-rangers.

In a bid to continue that legacy, Qualcomm is launching the Snapdragon 675 that is designed to be a great gaming chip for gaming devices in the mid-range segment of the market. Designed for handsets in the $300 to $500 range, the chipset features an Adreno 612 GPU and fourth generation Kryo CPU with two performance cores clocked at 2GHz and six efficiency cores at 1.7GHz. The chip promises 30 percent faster game launches and 20 percent faster music launches. Qualcomm also optimized the system-on-a-chip to deliver a high frame rate.

Another selling point of the Snapdragon 675 is the camera. The chip uses a Spectra 200 series image signal processor to support triple cameras and features including up to 5x optical zoom, real-time bokeh, super wide angle shots, and 3D face unlock

The first devices powered by this chip should be hitting the shelves sometime in the first quarter of 2019.
