MediaTek launches the mid-range Helio P70 smartphone chipset

MediaTek might not be as popular as the major players in the smartphone chip-making industry like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon or Huawei’s Hisilicon processors, but they still make really good chips. Their chips have graced countless mid-range devices like Tecno, Infinix, and Oppo among many other locally available brands. The company has just announced it’s the latest chipset for smartphones, the Mediatek Helio P70. This chip comes to replace the Helio P60 that was launched earlier this year and comes with notable increments to both CPU and GPU.

The new chip uses an octa-core system with ARM Cortex A73 processors clocked at 2.1GHz. Along with these, there are a set of four Cortex A53 chips clocked at 2.0GHz.

Gaming has got to be one of the most demanding tasks for any smartphone today. To ensure that the experience on devices using this chip is top notch, this chip is optimized to reduce frame-rate jitters and improve gameplay latency for in-game touch controls.

MediaTek is poising the Helio P70 at the mid-range segment of the market.  The predecessor, P60 ended up in phones around the $300-400 price range like the OPPO F9. If history is anything to go by, the P70 will most likely end up in similar handsets, targeted and sold primarily in African and Asian markets like India, Nigeria, Kenya, and China. As we speak, the chip is already in production, with consumer availability in phones pegged for as early as next month (November).
