In July 2017, SafeBoda, by far the biggest ride-hailing app in Uganda launched a feature that could allow you to pay with credit. They then went on to improve this feature and the latest development is that you can now top-up your SafeBoda account with some of the Safeboda riders.

This is a step in the right direction for technology since we are moving towards a cashless economy. For long, there have been complaints about how riders with these ride-hailing apps normally claim not to have change so that they can take all your money.

SafeBoda has been at the forefront of correcting this issue with their credit feature. With this, you just load credit on your SafeBoda account and then it will be deducted according to the amount of any ride you take.

Initially, credit top-ups used to be via MTN mobile money and Airtel Money. The process has now been made easier as you can now top-up your SafeBoda account with selected SafeBodas.

How to top up your SafeBoda account via a rider

Look out for SafeBodas with a sticker on their helmets that reads ‘Top Up With Me’ and simply exchange cash for cashless. You will be instantly topped up with no charges.

The SafeBoda will ask for the phone number you use on the app and then confirm to make sure it is your account. He will then transfer credit to your account within seconds.

For now, it’s only some SafeBodas who have the feature but SafeBoda has promised to on-board more as time goes by. The process is a quick and instant process and there are no charges incurred. You will also enjoy a discount of 25% on all Cashless rides.

With this, you have been saved the hustle of looking for change. Also, you shouldn’t be worried about being too far from a Mobile money agent in order to top up SafeBoda credit.
