OPPO teases world’s first under-display selfie camera

Smartphone makers have been coming up with rather ingenious ways go full screen. One hindrance to complete full-screen mode has been the front -facing camera. For that, we have seen everything from notches to pop-up cameras, hole punch displays and many more.

Today, OPPO is taking it to the next level with presumably the world’s first under-display camera. In this video posted on Oppo’s official Twitter account without much detail. What we can see, though, is a working front-facing camera that doesn’t need a notch, tear drop, hole punch, or pop-up sliding mechanism to leave that edge-to-edge display uninterrupted.

Engadget reports that the video was first posted to Weibo by Oppo VP Brian Shen. ”At this stage, it’s difficult for under-display cameras to match the same results as normal cameras, there’s bound to be some loss in optical quality,” wrote Shen. “But, no new technology jumps to perfection right away.”

OPPO has been at the forefront of smartphone innovation with impressive fetes like the OPPO N1 from several years back, that used the same main camera as the selfie camera with the aid of a swivle mechanism.

Super VOOC charging, the fastest of fast charging technologies we have around today is thanks to OPPO. It would be interesting to see where this under-display innovation goes from here.
