For the first time in 12 years, Amazon becomes the first non-technology company to be crowned the most valuable brand/company in the world. This comes according to a recent ranking by filed by BrandZ™, a customer-centric global brand equity platform that ranks over 100,000 companies across 45 countries based on their valuation.
The latest (2019) ranking that was released by BrandZ™ on June 11 valued Amazon at $315.5 billion and made it the most valued brand in the world. Amazon’s rise to the top of the list, however, was tied to an astonishing 52% year-on-year increase in the companies value. BrandZ noted that the increase in valuation is as a result of Amazon’s smart investments and acquisitions in the previous year.
Reports have it that while the companies core business wasn’t booming as it used to, Amazon increased and diversified its investment into other companies and ecosystems like AirPlan business (Amazon AIr), Pharmaceuticals (PillPack, an online pharmacy), Self-driving cars (Aurora), Electric pickup trucks and SUVs (Rivian) and many more.
“Amazon’s phenomenal brand value growth of almost $108 billion in the last year demonstrates how brands are now less anchored to individual categories and regions. The boundaries are blurring as technology fluency allow brands, such as Amazon, Google and Alibaba, to offer a range of services across multiple consumer touchpoints,”Doreen Wang, Kantar’s global head of BrandZ, according to CNBC.com
Amazon was followed closely by Apple and Google both with a respective valuation of $309.5 billion and $309.5 billion. Ranked fourth on the list is Microsoft, valued at $251.2 billion.
