Huawei Ban: US issues new bans. It is back to square one

Again Huawei appears to be banned from doing business with anyone in the United States. You might remember this entire ordeal happening way back in May of this year, which seems like a lifetime ago; since then, we’ve seen a topsy turvy story of new operating systems, potential workarounds, and more, which all ended with the US creating a licensing system that would allow Huawei to deal with US companies again.

But you didn’t expect that to be the end of the story, right?

It looks like Huawei is once again back on the ban list, according to a press conference from President Trump on Friday. He said that the United States won’t be doing business with Huawei, although that was followed by a statement that it doesn’t mean that “we won’t agree to something if and when we make a trade deal.” It’s hard to pin down exactly what that could and should mean, but it sounds like it’ll see the US using the trade ban as a bargaining chip over trade disputes.

There are still problems with that, of course, especially considering blocking out Huawei is going to hurt American companies like Google and Qualcomm, too.

Buckle up for another few weeks of back-and-forth and new rumors. And I wouldn’t place any bets on how things will end up, either. Keep an eye on Harmony OS, though.
