Top 5 smartphones under KES 30,000 in August 2019

They say cheap smartphones are getting good, and that fact is true today more than ever. While the ultra-premium smartphones are crossing the KES 100,000 price tag mark, a lot of devices are available that offer most of the features at a fraction of the price.

Today we shall look at a few of the best devices you can get for under KES 30,000.

Samsung Galaxy A50

Perhaps the hottest device we have in this price segment today, the A50 offers a lot for its price. It comes with a Full HD+ AMOLED display, a glasstic body (fancy name for polycarbonate plastic shell) and an under-display fingerprint sensor.

One of the biggest strengths of this device is the FHD+ AMOLED display and the battery size. However, users report being underwhelmed with the fingerprint sensor so that is worth keeping in mind.

You can grab yourself one of these from KSh 25,889 on Jumia

Huawei Y9 Prime 2019

Yet another hot mid-ranger from Huawei. This device packs a rather capable chipset, the Kirin 710 that we saw on the Huawei Y9 2019, a fancy coat of paint and a pop-up selfie camera.

It runs Huawei’s EMUI 9.1 on top of Android 9 Pie and has proven one of the best value for money devices we have around today.

Pricing starts from around KSh 23,098 on Jumia.

Nokia 7.1

Perhaps the most flagship-looking device we have yet, the Nokia 7.1 scores a solid A+ for build quality and design. It runs Google’s Android One like all other Nokia devices, which mean the OS shouldn’t be a hot mess like many skins we see around.

It sports a 5.8-inch FHD+ display and is powered by Snapdragon 660 so snappy performance is guaranteed for the most part. The battery size at just 3060mAh leaves a lot to be desired.

These devices have been a little hard to get but you can grab one of these on Jumia starting at KSh 28,990

Huawei P30 Lite

The Huawei P30 Pro has been the king of smartphone photography since it launched last year and the baby brother isn’t anything to scoff at either. The Huawei P30 Lite packs 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, a rather decent set of cameras, stunning build quality.

At launch, the device was quite pricy compared to the competition but with the launch of newer devices from Huawei, this impressive piece of engineering has seen several price cuts and today, you can grab one of these for around Ksh 25,000

OPPO F11 ,6GB RAM,64GB,Dual SIM

If you’re really pushing the budget, you could easily get an OPPO F11 today for just a little over KES 30,000.

For that, you get one of the best-designed smartphones we have around, a fancy pop-up selfie shooter, 6GB of RAM and a rather generous 64GB of storage.

You can purchase this device on Jumia for KSh 30,199

Honorable Mentions

These are by no means the only good devices at this price range. There are devices that I would have loved to feature but just couldn’t.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro for instance. A solid device, decent build quality, powerful chipset, generous storage all at exactly this price range. But good luck getting yourself one of these devices.

Xiaomi’s entire catalog falls in this price category. With the launch of several Mi Home stores in Nairobi, I hope these devices or future iterations of the same will be more widely available.
