MTN Uganda License renewed for another 12 years

MTN Uganda provides telecommunications services under a Second National Operator License for the operation of a telecommunications system issued on 15 April 1998 for a period of twenty years. The teleco’s License expired on 21 October 2018 but was variously extended to accommodate conclusion of renewal negotiations which have been ongoing for close to 2 years.

Now the Telco has managed to negotiate for renewal of its license for another 12 years under a new agreement with Uganda Communication Commission(UCC).

MTN Uganda is now pleased to announce the conclusion of negotiations for the renewal of its Second National Operator license which expired in October 2018.

MTN has fulfilled all conditions precedent to the license, including the payment of a total sum of US$100 million as license renewal fee for a period of 12 years commencing 1 July 2020. 

MTN Uganda is the largest Mobile Telcom in Uganda with over 11 million subscribers accounting to more than 50% of marketshare. The Telco is part of MTN Group, a multinational Telecommunication company connecting more than 230 million people in over 22 countries in Africa and Middle East.

MTN and the Commission will conclude the signature of the License Agreement within the coming days

MTN Uganda is known for leading innovations in Mobile communications, mobile banking, mobile digital content and business solutions. It’s also one of the largest private employers and the largest tax payer in Uganda.
