Microsoft patches Windows XP security flaw Despite End of Support

If you thought Microsoft is about to give on the decade-old Windows XP Operating System, then think again. Microsoft today rolled out an emergency patch for Internet Explorer that addresses a flaw which was detected on all versions of Windows out there, including Windows XP, even though the software giant had declared that it wasn’t supporting XP anymore after April 8th.

“We have made the decision to issue a security update for Windows XP users. Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft, and we continue to encourage customers to migrate to a modern operating system, such as Windows 7 or 8.1. Additionally, customers are encouraged to upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer, IE 11.” the company said yesterday in the Microsoft security response center blog.

As you can tell, Microsoft used the opportunity to remind its customers to switch to newer versions of its operating system as opposed to expecting security patches on the obsolete operating system. Microsoft of course assumes that you’ve “automatic updates” turned on inorder to receive the updates, otherwise, the patch serves you no good.

Microsoft isn’t just going to seat there while the other companies have its lunch money just because it ended support of Windows XP. In another statement on the companies security response center blog, the company stated that “The security of our products is something we take incredibly seriously” in its defense of patching the security flaw on XP. The company continue to assert that ” IE is the safest in the world due to its secure development and ability to protect customers, even in the face of cybercriminals who want to break it.” which seems quite odd of course following the vulnerability.

Windows XP remains running about 26% of the world’s computers and this is something that Microsoft can’t simply ignore. Microsoft thinks that XP users should upgrade to the latest versions of IE since they supports modern web standard, better performance and have a tone of cool stuff;

 The latest version of Internet Explorer has increased support for modern web standards, better performance, and expanded the ability to deliver an immersive experience from within the browser.  In other words, cool stuff that you need even if you didn’t know you need it.  And when you turn on auto update, we make sure your computer and your browser get better all the time.”
