PayPal in Uganda: How to receive money and be paid via Paypal

PayPal is a top choice for receiving money online, but getting your cash out in Uganda isn’t as straightforward as in some other countries. In Kenya, Paypal to Mpesa and Bank is straight-foward. So if you have a friend or relative in Kenya, I would suggest, you do down that route first.

I’ve personally explored the best options in 2025—here’s my up-to-date guide for Ugandan citizens.

What You Need Before You Start

– An active PayPal account (registered in your name)
– A Ugandan bank account or Visa/MasterCard (if using local banks)
– A trusted third-party service or fintech app (for alternative methods)
– Your national ID for verification (required by most banks and fintechs)

Method 1: Withdraw from PayPal to a Ugandan Bank Account (Visa/MasterCard)

  1. Log in to your PayPal account.
  2. Link your Ugandan Visa or MasterCard debit card (e.g., Stanbic, Absa, Centenary, Equity, UBA, etc.).
  3. Confirm your card (PayPal will charge a small refundable amount for verification).
  4. Once linked, select “Withdraw Funds” and choose your card.
  5. Funds are transferred in USD and converted to UGX by your bank (usually within 3–7 business days).

Tips:
– Check with your bank if your card supports PayPal withdrawals.
– Fees and exchange rates vary by bank.

Method 2: Use Equity Bank Uganda (PayPal to Equity, then to Mobile Money)

Equity bank Kenya already supports Paypal to Equity bank transfers, so it’s likely that the Ugandan branch does the same.

  1. Open an Equity Bank account and sign up for Equity Online or the Equity Mobile App.
  2. Link your PayPal account via the Equity app/portal.
  3. Withdraw funds from PayPal to your Equity account (can take 1–3 business days).
  4. Use the Equity app or USSD to transfer funds from Equity to your MTN or Airtel Money wallet.

Note:
– You’ll need to verify your identity and link your accounts.
– Transaction fees apply for both PayPal withdrawal and local transfers.

Method 3: Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Exchanges

Some Ugandans use trusted P2P exchanges or local agents to convert PayPal funds to mobile money.

Warning:
– Only use highly trusted, recommended agents.
– There is a risk of scams—always verify before sending money. We don’t recommend this route.
