Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp back on after 4 day Ugandan Social Media blackout

As of now, we can confirm that WhatsApp Facebook and Twitter are back on in Uganda. You no longer need a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to access your social networks (At least for now). This comes after a 4 day Social Media blackout in which Ugandan Telecoms were directed to block Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp. The directive was given by Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and effected on the evening of the 17th February 2016.

Government says that the decision to censor Social Media was for security reasons aiming at individuals who misuse social media to misinform and incite violence among members of the public. The directive was met with defiance that saw a good majority of urban Ugandans install VPNs to bypass the blockade. Statistics circulating on Social media have it that Ugandans downloaded over 1.5M VPNs in under 24 hours. We are glad the blockade has been lifted and we can finally access Social Media at least for now.
