Spotify Kills Premium Lite and Cuts Prices in India

Spotify is pulling its Premium Lite plan in India just six months after launching it, and cutting the price of its Standard and Student tiers at the same time.

The Standard plan drops from Rs. 199 to Rs. 139 per month; the Student plan falls from Rs. 99 to Rs. 69. Both plans keep the same benefits: ad-free streaming, offline downloads, and audio up to 320 kbps. The Premium Platinum plan — Rs. 299 per month, offering lossless audio and AI-powered playlist tools — is unchanged. Spotify confirmed the Lite removal to Moneycontrol: “We occasionally adapt the plans we offer, based on market opportunity and to provide users with choice and value. In India, the Lite plan is no longer available.” Spotify has not said what happens to existing Lite subscribers, and no migration path has been announced.

Spotify introduced the three-tier structure — Lite, Standard, Platinum — in India in November 2025 as a restructuring of its subscription model, simultaneously dropping the older Duo and Family plans for new subscribers. The Lite tier was designed as a budget entry point: ad-free listening at 160 kbps, but no offline downloads and no higher-quality audio. Its removal six months later suggests the tier didn’t generate enough new paid subscribers to justify keeping alongside the now-cheaper Standard plan.

The new Standard price of Rs. 139 per month puts Spotify below what JioSaavn and YouTube Music charge for comparable tiers in India, a market Spotify has identified as one of its fastest-growing. The cuts look like a volume play — more paid subscribers at a lower margin — rather than a signal that Spotify’s India business is struggling.

This signals the possibility of similar price cuts to other emerging markets such as Africa. Fingers crossed, only time will tell.
