Walmart Launches Six Android 16 Tablets Starting at $97

Walmart has launched six new tablets under its Onn brand, all running Android 16 out of the box, starting at $97 for the entry-level model and $288 for the 13-inch flagship.

The lineup splits into four “Core” models and two kids tablets. The cheapest is the Onn 7 Core at $97: a 7-inch, 1024×600 LCD with a Helio G80 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, microSD expansion, and an aluminum build. For $138, the Onn 8.1 Core moves to a Snapdragon 685 chipset and 6GB of RAM, with a larger 1524×1000 display and the same microSD slot. The $167 Onn 11 Core runs a MediaTek Helio G99 — a chip that turned up in midrange phones through 2023 and 2024 — with 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a claimed 15 to 17 hours of battery life. It comes in Silver, Navy, Mocha, and Pink. Walmart’s flagship, the $288 Onn 13 Pro, has a 2400×1600 IPS display, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, an IP54 dust and water resistance rating, a 13MP rear camera, and ships with both a stylus and a folio case in the box.

The two kids tablets — priced at $136 for the 11-inch model and $118 for the 8-inch — add thick bumper cases with built-in kickstands, a child-tailored software experience, and a 45-day free ABC Mouse subscription. The 11-inch kids model includes stylus support; the 8-inch version uses an undisclosed MediaTek chipset. Both come in blue, purple, orange, and pink.

Walmart’s Onn line has sold budget Android tablets for years, typically with older operating systems and slower chips. Shipping with Android 16 is a meaningful upgrade from what most budget brands manage at launch — many arrive on Android 13 or 14 and get one major update at best. The Helio G99 and Snapdragon 685 are respectable budget-tier processors that should handle streaming, video calls, and everyday apps without the choppiness that plagues the very cheapest Android hardware. The 13 Pro’s IP54 rating and included stylus are additions rarely seen at this price segment.

The critical open question for Onn, as for all budget Android tablets, is software update longevity. Walmart has not publicly committed to any update schedule for the lineup. Tablets are in use far longer than smartphones, and a device that ships with Android 16 but stops receiving security patches after eighteen months carries risks that don’t show up in a spec sheet. The tablets are available now on Walmart’s website and in stores.
