Should Uganda Online publishers and influencers pay 73K for licenses?

Communications regulator in Uganda, Uganda communications commission (UCC) has started registering publishers who use online platforms for communication services businesses. The commission requires that online publishers and influencers get licenses.

As of last year, the commission made it mandatory for all publishers to register and acquire licenses that allow them to carry out their communication and commercial services online.

Head of Public Relations at UCC, Ibrahim Bbossa said, “With the growing entity of online publishers, we realized it was important to register these individuals so as they are mindful of the law and regulations as they publish their content to the public. As UCC, it is upon us to put into implementation these laws so that just in case of any problems that arise we are able to come up with resolutions”.

What online services is UCC talking about?

The data communication service providers that the commission ordered to register include

  • Online publishers
  • Online news platforms
  • Online Radio
  • Television operators

How much is the license?

All the above are required to pay $20 (73800) for registration. So far, over forty online publishers have registered and received licenses to operate.
