Launched on 27th February 2025 at the Kampala Serena Hotel, this innovation strengthens MTN’s commitment to financial inclusion and Uganda’s digital economy.
The Virtual Card by MoMo is a secure, digital payment tool linked directly to your MTN MoMo Wallet. It allows users to make card-based payments on any e-commerce platform, website, or social media channel that accepts card payments. Whether paying school fees, shopping online, booking travel, or boosting your business on social media, this solution removes barriers to digital access.
Uganda’s digital finance sector is booming, with mobile money transactions hitting Shs 191 trillion between 2022 and 2023 (Bank of Uganda). The Virtual Card by MoMo builds on this momentum, aligning with MTN’s Ambition 2025 to drive financial inclusion and economic empowerment across Africa.

A Fresh Start for MTN’s Virtual Card
This isn’t MTN’s first virtual card. In 2018, the telco partnered with United Bank of Africa (UBA) to launch the MTN MoMoCard, which was discontinued two years later for undisclosed reasons. The new Virtual Card by MoMo builds on those lessons, offering enhanced security, accessibility, and partnerships to ensure long-term success.
