In the past few months, Kenyans have been finding themselves paying for power more than they usually do, thanks to increased tariffs and the price of power. In this post, we show you how to pay for your Kenya Power Bill.

How to Pay for Prepaid Tokens

  • Go to M-Pesa and select “Pay Bill” from the M-Pesa menu.
  • Enter the Kenya Power business number in Kenya 888880 for KPLC prepaid customers.
  • Enter your meter number e.g 01020030040
  • Enter your M-PESA PIN and wait for a notification from Kenya Power with your Token digits that you will then feed into the Consumer Unit.

How to Pay for Postpaid Customers

  • Select “Pay Bill” from the M-PESA menu.
  • Enter the Kenya Power business number 888888.
  • Enter your new Kenya Power account number e.g. 123456.
  • Enter the amount you wish to pay which should be between Shs. 100 and Shs.35,000.
  • Enter your M-PESA PIN.
  • Confirm that all details are correct.

Airtel Money is another mobile money service that you can use to pay your electricity bill. To pay your postpaid electricity bill in Kenya, follow these steps:

  • Go to Airtel Money and select “Make Payments” from the Airtel Money menu.
  • Select “Pay Bill”.
  • Choose Kenya Power Bill for postpaid bill OR Kenya Power Prepaid for purchase of tokens.
  • Enter your KPLC account number.
  • Enter the amount you wish to pay.
  • Enter your Airtel Money PIN.

Equitel

Equitel is a mobile banking service that allows you to access your bank account from your phone. You can use it to pay your electricity bill or buy prepaid tokens in Kenya. To pay your postpaid bill, follow these steps:

  • Select “My Money” from the Equitel menu.
  • Select “Send/Pay” option.
  • Select “Account” option.
  • Select “Enter Business Number” option and enter 888888 as the business number for postpaid bill payment OR 888880 for prepaid token purchase.
  • Select “Enter Account Number” option and enter your new Kenya Power account number e.g. 123456 for postpaid bill payment OR your meter number e.g. 01020030040 for prepaid token purchase.
  • Enter the amount you wish to pay which should be between Shs. 100 and Shs.35,000.
  • Confirm that all details are correct by pressing OK
  • Enter your Equitel PIN
  • You will receive a confirmation of the transaction via SMS.

To buy prepaid tokens is Equitel, follow these steps:

  • Select “My Money” from the Equitel menu.
  • Select “Send/Pay” option.
  • Select “Account” option.
  • Select “Enter Business Number” option and enter 888880 as the business number for the prepaid token purchase
  • Select “Enter Account Number” option and enter your meter number e.g. 01020030040 for prepaid token purchase
  • Enter the amount you wish to buy which should be between Shs. 100 and Shs.35,000
  • Confirm that all details are correct by pressing OK
  • Enter your Equitel PIN
  • You will receive a confirmation of the transaction via SMS and an SMS with your token number.

It is worth noting that you can also use online banking platforms such as PesaLink or Pesapal to pay your electricity bill in Kenya. To use PesaLink, you need to have an account with one of the participating banks and register for the service.

To use Pesapal, you need to have an account with one of the supported payment methods such as M-PESA, Airtel Money, Visa, Mastercard, or Paypal. To pay your postpaid bill or buy prepaid tokens using these platforms, follow these steps:

  • Visit the Kenya Power website at https://selfservice.kplc.co.ke/
  • Click on “Pay Bill” or “Buy Tokens” option
  • Enter your account number or meter number and the amount you wish to pay or buy
  • Select your preferred payment method from the list of options
  • Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the transaction
  • You will receive a confirmation of the payment or token purchase via email or SMS

Kenya Power has had issues with these online banking and payment methods so we recommend you stick to Mobile money methods.
