Facebook Lite: Facebook announces a lighter App for slower networks

Today, Facebook announced that they are now rolling out the Facebook Lite app in countries across Asia, and over the coming weeks, in Latin America, Africa and Europe. We first heard about the app earlier this year but it seemed like it was still in the works.

For many entry level smartphone users, the Facebook app is heavy and takes a lot of memory leaving too little space for other apps. Meanwhile, many users would still need to install more Facebook apps like Pages Manager, Groups, or Messenger all of which are heavy too. Memory aside, the Android Facebook app is a data guzzler and may not work well with slow internet speeds. So Facebook Lite would make a lot of sense to the majority of smartphone users in Asia and Africa. According to Facebook,

More than a billion people around the world access Facebook from a range of mobile devices on varying networks. In many areas, networks can be slow and not able to support all the functionality found in Facebook for Android. Facebook Lite was built for these situations, giving people a reliable Facebook experience when bandwidth is at a minimum.

Facebook Lite is less than 1MB making it fast to install and quick to load. It allows you to access most of what you love on the usual Facebook like News Feed, status updates, photos and notifications. Since the app inst yet available for Africa, we weren’t able to experience it.
