We all use electricity and chances are that it is from Umeme Uganda. If you have the traditional Umeme meter, it means you still get the monthly paper bills or the eBill by email. In this post, we shall show you all the available options on how to pay for your electricity bill or buy Yaka tokens/units.
How to pay for your electricity bill/Umeme Yaka using MTN Mobile Money
Dial *165# > Select 4 (Payments) > Select Option 1 (Utilities) > Select Option 1 (Umeme Touch Pay) > Select Option 1 if you are paying your electricity bill or Option 2 if you are paying for Yaka > enter the account number > Amount you are paying > then password. Your payment shall be confirmed via SMS with the account no. and amount paid. When you do, you will receive a verification SMS followed by an SMS with your token ID which you can then feed into you Yaka Customer Interface Unit to load the Yaka units.
How to pay for your electricity bill/Umeme Yaka using the My MTN App
After you log into the app, tap the mobile money tab. At this point it will show you your balance.
Tap on Make payments > Bill Payment >Select preferred bill payment (In this case Umeme Yaka) > type in Yaka meter number and click proceed > Enter desired amount > Click Pay bill > Confirm Payment. You will then receive two messages. One indicating that the transaction has been successful and another with your token ID which you can then feed into you Yaka Customer Interface Unit to load the Yaka units.
How to pay for your electricity bill/Umeme Yaka using Airtel Money
Step 1: Dial *185# on your phone > Select Option 4 (Pay bill) > Select Option 1 (Umeme Touch Pay > Select Option 1 for Umeme bills or Option 2 for Umeme Yaka > Enter Yaka/Customer number > Enter amount > Enter PIN to confirm transaction. You will receive an SMS confirming your transaction and giving you your token ID which you can then feed into you Yaka Customer Interface Unit to load the Yaka units.

Launch app > Select pay bill > Select Umeme Touch Pay > Enter your Customer/Yaka meter no. >Enter Amount > Enter PIN. You will receive a confirmation of transaction and an SMS with the Yaka token ID which you can then feed into you Yaka Customer Interface Unit to load the Yaka units.

Dial *144# > Select 3 (Bill Payment) > Select 2 (Utility bills) > Select 2 (Umeme) > Select 1/2 (Bill Payment or Yaka Prepaid) > enter Umeme Account No. > Enter amount > Enter PIN. After this you will receive a message with your Token ID which you can then feed into you Yaka Customer Interface Unit to load the Yaka units.

Dial *185# > Select 5 payments > Select 1 Utilities > Select 2 Pay UMEME > Select 1 Yaka or 2 Umeme Bill > Select 2 self > Enter Account Number > Enter Amount > Select 1 confirm > Enter PIN. Transaction is complete, you will get a message with your token ID which you can then feed into you Yaka Customer Interface Unit to load the Yaka units.
How to pay for your electricity bill/Umeme Yaka using Payway
To use Payway, you have to find a vending machine. Payway vending machines can be found at many supermarkets, malls, fuel stations and with Payway agents. To buy Umeme Yaka token at a Payway vending machine, follow these instructions.
From the default interface, Select Utilities > Umeme Yaka > Input the Yaka account no. > Add your contact no. > Confirm Umeme Yaka account no./owner > Select amount (Minimum Ugx 20,000 Max Ugx 50,000) > Insert cash > Select Pay. A confirmation of the transaction plus the Yaka token ID will be sent via SMS to your phone and also on the slip provided by the vending machine.

Find an Ezee money agent> avail them your Yaka account number + how much you intend to spend> with these details, they will give you a slip with a Yaka token ID.
How to pay for your electricity bill/Umeme Yaka using the bank
Visit any one of these banks and pick up a payment slip. Most banks have specific Umeme bill payment slips. Fill in the slip correctly clearly stating your account number and amount to be paid. Hand it to the teller. After verification of the account number and amount, the teller will give you your copy of the payment slip plus another slip containing the token ID. In this LIST you will find all the banks that allow for Umeme bill payments.
How to load Yaka token/units
Yaka uses a token to recharge the meter with credit energy. The meter will only accept the 20-digit token number. You need your swipe card (or a previous Yaka purchase receipt) to buy a token. Alternatively, press #100# on your meter to get your serial number, which you can also use to purchase electricity.
Upon purchase, you will be given a 20-digit Yaka token. All you have to do is enter the 20-digit number into the CIU (Yaka Meter). In case of any problem in loading/topping up Yaka credit, please check with the error codes or call 0800 185 185 for help.
