HMD Global adds an extra year of support for its senile Nokia smartphones

Nokia support

HMD Global took over the production of Nokia smartphones in 2017 ushering in a revival of the Nokia brand with the Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and Nokia 3 smartphones. Later that same year, the Nokia 8 and Nokia 2 were released. HMD Global promises two years of security updates for its smartphones and that happens to end this year for the aforementioned smartphones. So far, there has been a timely release of security patches for Nokia smartphones as promised. However, the company is willing to provide an additional year for the smartphones mentioned here.

Instead of security updates for the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 and Nokia 8 ending this year, they will be receiving security patches up until 2020. The security patches will be coming quarterly starting from September 2019 and will end on September 2020 for Nokia 3 while Nokia 5, Nokia 6 and Nokia 8 quarterly security patch update will span from October 2019 to October 2020.

On the downside, the Nokia 6 Amazon model in India and the US will not be included in the extra year of update program and will stop receiving security update come October 2019. Another smartphone that will stop receiving updates is the entry-level Nokia 2 smartphone.

A bunch of OEMs don’t provide regular security patches for their smartphones, not to talk of extending their security patch support timeline for their smartphones. Some even go back on their promise of providing security patch support, so Nokia’s gesture of an extra year of support is a good gesture that deserves some credit.
