Back in 2020, Chromecast was my favorite way to turn any TV into a smart TV. Now, in 2025, things look very different. Google has discontinued the original Chromecast and replaced it with the Chromecast with Google TV, plus the new Google Streamer 4K. So, is Chromecast still worth it in 2025? After months of daily use, here’s my honest take.
Streaming wars are still raging, and TVs have only gotten bigger and smarter. Chromecast with Google TV bridges the gap between internet streaming and the big screen better than ever.
The original Chromecast made casting simple, but as streaming apps and smart TVs evolved, that simplicity became a limitation. Google’s answer? Chromecast with Google TV. It’s not just a casting dongle; it’s a full-featured streaming device with its own remote, personalized recommendations, and a slick Google TV interface. The 2025 Google Streamer 4K ups the ante with even faster performance and better HDR albeit at a hefty $99 price tag, but for most people, Chromecast with Google TV remains the best value.

Buy on AmazonSetting up Chromecast with Google TV took me just a few minutes—plug in, connect to Wi-Fi, sign in with my Google account, and I was streaming in no time. The home screen puts all my favorite apps front and center: Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, YouTube, and more. No more juggling my phone or fighting with clunky TV menus.
The remote is a great addition seeing as the previous model didn’t have one. I love using Google Assistant to search for shows or control playback. The interface is fast, modern, and I haven’t run into any lag, even when watching 4K content.

However, the competition is fierce: Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K Max, Roku Streaming Stick 4K, and Apple TV 4K all have their strengths. But Chromecast with Google TV stands out for its clean interface, deep Google Assistant integration, and affordable price. The new Google Streamer 4K is great for power users, but for most people, Chromecast with Google TV is the perfect balance.
